# BDL Authentication System Implementation

## Overview

I've implemented a comprehensive, secure authentication system for your BDL dashboard with the following key
features:

## 🔐 Security Features Implemented

### 1. **HTTP-Only Cookies for Token Storage**

- Tokens are stored in HTTP-only cookies (not accessible via JavaScript)
- Cookies are set with secure flags for production
- Automatic expiration handling

### 2. **JWT Token Management**

- Secure JWT implementation with expiration checking
- Automatic token verification on every protected request
- Token refresh mechanism

### 3. **Protected Routes & Middleware**

- Backend middleware for token verification
- Admin role verification
- Dashboard origin checking (prevents external API access)

### 4. **CORS Protection**

- Configured CORS to only allow specific origins
- Credentials support for cookie-based authentication
- Prevents unauthorized external API access

## 🚀 Implementation Details

### Backend Changes

#### New Middleware (`middleware/auth.js`)

- verifyToken: Validates JWT from cookies or headers
- verifyAdmin: Ensures user has admin privileges
- verifyDashboardOrigin: Prevents external API access

#### Updated User Controller

- Enhanced login with HTTP-only cookie setting
- Added logout endpoint to clear cookies
- Added token verification endpoint
- Improved error handling with structured responses

- Separated public routes (for frontend) from admin routes (for dashboard)

#### Enhanced AuthContext

### Dependencies Added

- Backend: `cookie-parser` (for handling HTTP cookies)
- All other dependencies already existed

## 🔄 How It Works

### 1. **Login Process**

1. User submits credentials
2. Backend validates and creates JWT
3. JWT stored in HTTP-only cookie
4. User data (non-sensitive) stored in localStorage for UI
5. User redirected to dashboard

### 2. **Request Authentication**

1. Every dashboard API request includes HTTP-only cookie
2. Backend middleware verifies JWT from cookie
3. User identity attached to request object
4. Route-specific authorization checks

### 3. **Token Expiration**

1. Automatic verification every 5 minutes
2. Axios interceptor catches 401 responses
3. Automatic redirect to login on expiration
4. Clean logout with cookie clearing

### 4. **Multi-Tab Security**

1. Storage event listeners for synchronization
2. Visibility change detection for token refresh
3. Consistent authentication state across tabs

## 🔧 Usage

### For Dashboard Development

- All authentication is handled automatically
- Use `isAuthenticated` from AuthContext to check auth state
- Use `userInfo` for user data in components
- Call `logoutUser()` to logout

### For Public Frontend

- No authentication required
- Can access public API endpoints
- Cannot access admin endpoints

## 🔍 Monitoring & Debugging

### Check Authentication Status

- Browser DevTools > Application > Cookies (check for 'token' cookie)
- Network tab to see if requests include cookies
- Console for authentication errors

### Common Issues

1. **Cookie not set**: Check CORS configuration and domain
2. **Token expired**: Check JWT_EXPIRE setting
3. **Origin blocked**: Verify CORS origins include your domain
4. **Admin access denied**: Ensure user role is 'admin'
